About
Brown-Forman Distillery is a major production-focused whiskey facility in Louisville’s Shively area, responsible for distilling and warehousing much of Brown-Forman’s Kentucky bourbon and whiskey portfolio. Unlike Old Forester Distilling Co. on Whiskey Row, which is the company’s public-facing Louisville bourbon experience, the Brown-Forman Distillery is an industrial production site rather than a visitor destination. It plays a critical behind-the-scenes role for brands connected to Brown-Forman’s Kentucky whiskey identity, including Old Forester, Woodford Reserve, and Coopers’ Craft. For bourbon fans, this is one of those important “where the work happens” locations. Not a tour stop, but a serious distilling and warehousing operation tied to one of Louisville’s most influential spirits companies.
History
Brown-Forman was founded in Louisville in 1870 and has grown into one of the world’s major spirits companies, with premium and super-premium brands sold across more than 170 countries. The company’s Louisville presence includes corporate offices, production facilities, and shipping warehouses, reflecting how deeply the business remains tied to its hometown. Brown-Forman’s Shively distillery history dates to the mid-20th century through a site originally built in 1935 by the Old Kentucky Distillery Company. Brown-Forman acquired the distillery in 1940, later replaced the original operation with the current facility in 1954–1955, and completed a major expansion in 1966–1967.
Notoriety
Brown-Forman Distillery is notable because it represents the large-scale production backbone behind some of Kentucky’s most recognized whiskey brands. Brown-Forman’s official materials describe the distillery as responsible for distilling and warehousing the majority of the company’s Kentucky bourbons and whiskies, making it an important part of the supply chain even though travelers do not typically experience it firsthand. Its significance is also tied to the company behind it: Brown-Forman’s portfolio includes major names such as Old Forester, Woodford Reserve, Jack Daniel’s, Coopers’ Craft, and other global spirits brands.
